Craig’s Office.

While the D.C.I.s were plotting, Davy was updating their boss on where he’d got to with Oisín O’Neill’s disappearance and now they were discussing the seven remaining men on Tommy’s Hill’s list.

Craig scanned them, nodding.

“So nothing on the ancestral links yet?”

“Nope.”

“And you’ve no way of narrowing things any further, Davy?”

He turned to his inspector as he asked, not waiting for a response that he already knew would be no. The analyst was too good to have shown him the seven names at all if that had been the case.

“This will take a lot of legwork, Annette.”

“Tell me about it.” She glanced meaningfully at her high heels. “But in answer to your question, we’ve also been searching for sectarian connections and paramilitary memberships so,” she looked hopefully at the computer expert, “has that moved us any further forward?”

Davy waited until both detectives were watching before dropping a forefinger dramatically to his keyboard for the great reveal.

When a shortlist of just three names appeared Craig smiled and leaned forward to read them, unsurprised to find that only one didn’t belong to an Irvine; a man called Morgan Robb.

“Never heard of him, but I’m betting that Liam has. The Irvines always felt like they’d feature.”

His D.I. crinkled her forehead. “Morgan Robb rings a bell with me, sir, but I can’t think why.” After a moment she shrugged. “I’m sure it will come.”

The analyst’s finger was hovering above his keyboard again so they nodded him on. The next reveal was a family tree that he enlarged and began reporting on.

“OK, so the reason you might have heard of Morgan Robb is because he’s the Irvine twins’ first cousin. His dad was injured in the s...same PIRA shooting theirs was killed in, but while the Irvines joined the paramilitaries Robb initially took the law and order route.”

Craig frowned. “He joined the RUC?”

“No, the Territorial Army.”

Annette rested her elbows on the desk.

“So how did he end up with a criminal record and paramilitary connections?”

Craig sighed heavily. “I think I can guess. Back in the seventies and eighties, when we were just kids and Einstein here hadn’t even been thought of, things were very dangerous in this place. You’re aware of that, Davy? Yes?”

He was answered by a nod.

“Right, so the legal methods of fighting terrorists were apparently too slow for some in the military and police and they took the law into their own hands. Sometimes allegedly in collusion with Loyalist paramilitaries and sometimes on their own. It heralded a ‘You kill one of ours and we’ll kill one of yours’ spree and a lot of cover-ups, some of which are still being unpicked. Everyone’s heard of the big Loyalist vigilante groups like the Glenanne Gang but there were smaller ones too, and some of their members eventually got caught.”

He gestured at the shortlist. “I’m guessing Morgan Robb was one of those, Davy?”

“Correct.”

The analyst played a news clip from an eighties’ shooting in the Armagh countryside.

“Robb and two others, one a reserve cop and one T.
